Information sent on behalf of Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch Schemes are in an excellent position to help others at this time of crisis.  I hope that the following information will be of use to you all.

With best wishes, Jemma Metcalfe-Gibson, Project Officer, Action with Communities in Cumbria, jemmametcalfe-gibson@cumbriaaction.org.uk.

Support for Volunteers
Please see Action with Communities in Cumbria’s News page for Guidance about Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Communities.  http://www.cumbriaaction.org.uk/News-Events/News  ‘Community Response’ and ‘Volunteering’ sections of the guidance will be particularly relevant e.g. how to approach your community, how best to help your community ranging from issues such as how to go about shopping, handling money and bagging shopping, as well issues relating to confidentiality and safety.

Free Public Liability Insurance for Groups
Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch Association has organised free Public Liability Insurance
for groups involved in Covid-19 community support.

Information can be found here http://www.cumbriaaction.org.uk/What-We-Do/Community-Emergency-Planning (scroll down the webpage to ‘Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch – Insurance offer for Emergency planning groups’).

To receive insurance, as well as being a Neighbourhood Watch member, you must have an emergency plan and complete a risk assessment (templates can be found on the same webpage).

Tell your Area Support Team so that all of our efforts can be coordinated
If your group is providing Covid-19 community support, please contact your local area support team so that they can help to co-ordinate groups and make sure that help is being offered where it is needed.  Please note that these are for groups only and not for individuals.

Local Area Updates - https://cumbria.gov.uk/coronavirus/communities.asp

Each District Council’s website has information about how the coronavirus is affecting your area.  The information they provide varies.  Some councils are also posting weekly newsletters (Local Area Updates) where you can find useful information such as your local community response groups, library, transport and waste collection services, council tax, benefits and financial support.

Community Groups – for now and the future
If you are looking to set up a more formal, coordinated and permanent group to support your community now and in the longer term, you can do this by growing your neighbourhood watch scheme and/or by creating one of both of the following:
Good Neighbours Scheme – to link people up who need help with member of the community who would like to help.
Community Emergency Plan - so that communities and households are prepared for times of crises such as extreme weather conditions.

Please see ACT’s website http://www.cumbriaaction.org.uk/ for further details.
