Home Improvement Cold Caller Warning - Shap Area

Alert message sent 27/11/2018 10:43:00

Information sent on behalf of Cumbria County Council

Cumbria Trading Standards have received a report from a Shap resident who was cold called by a replacement window salesman.  The salesman persuaded the elderly consumer to agree to home improvements with the promises of a price reduction.

NEVER use cold callers who arrive at your property offering to undertake work.  They may offer a price reduction for signing on the day which is part of their sales pitch and discounts are often false and misleading.

If you are planning pre-winter repairs it is understandable you want the repairs or installation completed as quickly as possible, but make sure in all the haste you do not end up with a rogue trader or poor quality repairs.  Get at least three quotes for the work – more if it’s a major project and discuss with family and friends.

Look at a trader’s previous work and always start with local traders that you actually know or are recommended.  While online reviews can build a picture, they can be skewed.  A good trader should be able to provide a list of former customers you can speak to locally.

If you receive a visit of this nature please do not engage with anyone who arrives at your property.

Cumbria Trading Standards and Cumbria Police advice is simple; do not hand over any money or personal information to any cold callers whether on the telephone or on the doorstep.  Often these companies prey on the most vulnerable so please look after those in your community.

If you or someone you know has been targeted in this or a similar manner, please contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or Cumbria Police 101.
